While muscle growth absolutely requires taking sets close to muscular failure, routinely training to absolute failure on every set causes disproportionate Central Nervous System (CNS) fatigue without providing additional hypertrophic benefits (Helms et al., 2016).
The modern evidence-based trainer uses autoregulation tools like Reps In Reserve (RIR) or the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). Science shows that stopping a set 1–3 reps shy of true failure (1-3 RIR) provides the same hypertrophic stimulus as going to absolute failure, but allows the client to recover faster and accumulate more high-quality volume over the week (Zourdos et al., 2016).
Coaching Takeaway: Simply making training "hard" is not coaching. The physiological management of fatigue through precise RIR prescription is what separates professionals from amateurs. Athletes first, winning second.
